Winter tire size for 986

Hello, need some help with the correct size for 986 winter tires. The car came new with 18 inch rims and has never be driven in the snow. I recently purchased some rims off another PCA member – 17 inch boxster 986 rims but the tires are to old (2001 and 2003). He had 205/50/17 on the front and 255/40/17 on the rear but he had them on a 987. I was just told that the 987 and 986 had different tire size but when I called Porsche they could not tell me the ideal size for a winter tire for a 17 inch OEM Boxster wheel. Any suggestions. Also, does anyone know if I will need spacers when I go from a 18 down to a 17.
